Romanian who won arctic ultra-marathon three times, declared honorary citizen of Bucharest

29 March 2018

Bucharest’s General Council (CGMB) approved on Wednesday, March 28, the proposal to give Tibi Useriu the title of honorary citizen of Bucharest.

The draft project was approved with 45 votes in favor and two abstentions, local News.ro reported.

“Ice Man” Tibi Useriu managed a great performance earlier this month, when he won the Arctic Ultra 6633 race for the third time in a row. The Arctic Ultra 6633 is one of the hardest ultra-marathons in the world, and the Romanian won the 2016, 2017 and 2018 editions.

However, he announced earlier this week that he would not attend the ceremony the Bucharest City Hall plans to organize to give him the honorary citizen of Bucharest title.

“Dear friends, I learned from the press about the proposal to grant me the title of honorary citizen of Bucharest, and I also learned from the press that one of the reasons would be that my example is “about how to rehabilitate others”. I would never have thought that such a responsibility could fall on my shoulders. I want my example to inspire those who want to overcome their limits, always in the service of good, not to “rehabilitate others,” he wrote on Facebook.

The CGMB also approved on Wednesday the proposal to offer the title of honorary citizen of Bucharest to philosopher and essayist Mihai Sora.
