Romanian city buys containers to house the homeless

20 November 2017

Timisoara, a city in western Romania, plans to purchase 12 containers to house the homeless this winter.

Some 100 people will be housed there, increasing the city’s capacity to accommodate the homeless. The Timisoara Social Assistance Department currently has 104 available accommodation places at two centers in the city.

The purchase of the 12 containers is possible after the Social Assistance Department received an additional RON 342,941 (EUR 74,500) after the latest budget adjustment made by the local council, Opinia Timisoarei reported.

Each container can accommodate eight or ten people. They will be moved around the city, wherever the municipality decides there is a need for them. Those in need of a home will receive here clothing, two daily meals, medical assistance and psychological counselling.

The Social Assistance Department hopes to be able to open the containers during the second part of the winter. At the same time, it plans to construct a new building where the homeless can also reintegrate socially. Imre Farkas, the deputy mayor of Timisoara, said the city was also looking to set up a center for women who are victims of abuse.

Besides the two centers of the city’s Social Assistance Department, the homeless in Timisoara can be accommodated at the Pater Jordan night asylum, offering 75 places, and at the Timisoara ’89 shelter, where 50 places are available.
