Romania’s trade deficit continues to widen

Romania’s exports went up by 7.6% in February compared to the same month of last year, to EUR 5.46 billion, while imports increased by 10.7%, reaching EUR 6.34 billion.

The trade deficit thus widened by 35% compared to January 2017, to EUR 882 million.

In the first two months the year, the exports totaled EUR 10.88 billion, up 11.6% year-on-year, while imports amounted to EUR 12.54 billion, up 13.9%. The trade deficit was EUR 1.66 billion, up by a third compared to the first two months of 2017.

Machinery and transport equipment represented almost half (48.7%) of Romania’s exports in the first two months, followed by manufactured goods classified mainly by raw materials (16.8%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (15.2%).

Machinery also represented 37.1% of Romania’s imports, followed by manufactured goods (19.9%) and chemicals (13%). Food and livestock imports amounted to EUR 933.5 million, representing 7.5% of the total imports, while food exports stood at EUR 561 million, namely 5.1% of the total exports.
