Traditional Romanian costumes and masks to feature in exhibition at the Venice Carnival

The celebrated Venice Carnival will feature an exhibition of traditional Romanian costumes and masks this year. The exhibition Romania: Costume si masti populare de ceremonie (Romania: Ceremonial costumes and traditional masks) will run between February 2 to 14 at the Scuola Grande di San Teodoro.

The carnival theme is Vivi in Colori” (Living in colors), which should provide ample room for all the color, extravagance and exuberance of arguably the world's most beautiful carnival.

The Romanian exhibition includes "Cununa de mireasă"( bride’s wreath), "peana de ginere" (podoabă de căciulă - a hat ornament), "ştergarul de naş"(the godfather towel), "baltagul de vornic"(the governor's hatchet), "ciocanul de uspeţe" (traditional hammer), among the "însemnele colindătorilor" (carol singers ornaments-podoabe de căciulă), "pălăriile Căluşarilor"( hats of Calusari) and the masks for the ”Jocurile de priveghi”  (vigil games).

Romanian traditional textile art will also be on display at the exhibition and the craftsman Paul Buta will give demonstrations of  traditional mask making techniques.
