Transparency International: Romanian companies not concerned by ethics

20 December 2011

Only one in five Romanian companies have a code of ethics in place, found a recent study issued by Transparency International. Just 117 companies of the 631 included in the study have published an ethics code, while the rest did not show interest in a more transparent way of doing business, according to the study. “Concern about ethics in Romania's business environment mainly arises from the presence foreign companies in the country, rather than an awareness of the need for integrity,” reads a statement from Transparency International.

“One of the main conclusions of the study is that companies in Romania don't know how to protect themselves against illegal and unethical behavior, be it staff, suppliers or public administration. We could say Romanian companies are more vulnerable to the crisis because they have not learned to secure their investments, first of all internally,” said Cristian Ducu, author of the study and consultant on ethics issues.
