Transport minister: Romania doesn’t need 3,000 kilometers of freeways

10 September 2014

Romania’s transport minister Ioan Rus recently said that the draft of the General Master Plan for Transport which should to be approved by the European Commission mentions that 600 kilometers of freeways will be built in Romania between 2014 and 2020.

“Most certainly we will not have 3,000 kilometers of freeways because there’s nothing we can do with them,” Rus said, according to Agerpres newswire.

He added that in addition to the 600 kilometers of freeways the country would also need 2,500 kilometers of express roads and 3,000 kilometers of modernized trans-regional roads.

Romania should get some EUR 6 billion European funds for roads for the 2014-2020 financial exercise and another EUR 3.5 billion for railway infrastructure, Rus also said.
