Trojan antiquities on display at Western Romania museum
The National Banat Museum in Timisoara, a city in Western Romania, will host an exhibition featuring a part of the Heinrich Schliemann’s collection of Trojan antiquities, Timis Online reported. The exhibition is the result of an agreement with the Museum for Prehistory and Early History in Berlin.
German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann supported the idea that The Iliad and The Aeneid reflected historical events. He worked at the site of Hissarlik, believed to be the ancient Troy, located in today’s Turkey. Schliemann’s collection of Trojan antiquities includes what is known as the ‘Treasure of Priam’, partially hosted by the Berlin museum.
“We are talking about 139 items, including a part of what is known as the Treasure of Priam. These are some very interesting exhibits. It is an exhibition about the life of Schliemann. Some of the most interesting pieces are two special diadems,” Claudiu Ilaș, the director of the Banat Museum, told Timis Online.
The exhibition will be open at the Terezia Bastion in Timisoara between November 10 and February 25, 2018.
Timisoara will hold the title of European Capital of Culture in 2021.
