Two die in snow-bound in Romania, roads still blocked due to bad weather

26 January 2012

The snowfall kept national roads closed across Romania on Thursday (January 26), where almost 1,000 of cars have been blocked due to the bad weather. Two man died in Giurgiu and Tulcea county respectively and one woman was sent with hypothermia to the hospital in Giurgiu county, after staying for hours in the snowed in car. A 70-year old man in Tulcea died waiting for the ambulance which was delayed due to the weather. Shelters have been created in schools across Romania to accommodate snowed in drivers.

Capital city Bucharest continues to be disconnected from the rest of the country, as routes in and out the city have been blocked. Flights at both Otopeni and Baneasa airports in the capital city have been canceled, as well as trains in the North Railways Station in the capital city.

In the country, Constanta, Tulcea and Vrancea counties are among the most affected, with the majority of roads either already closed down, or soon to be closed. Several trucks with merchandise have been blocked around Bucharest, according to authorities.

The Bucharest Municipality authorities will close down traffic in the city alternatively on main boulevards and smaller streets on Thursday night (January 26) to spread non-skid substance on the streets. Some of the cars parked on larger boulevards will be temporarily lifted to allow the snow cleanup. Meteorologists expect the blizzard to calm down until Friday (January 27) at noon.
