Two famous citadels in Romania to be restored with EU funds
Fagaras and Rasnov, two of the most well known citadels in Romania, will be restored with some EUR 8.5 million worth of EU funds.
The two monuments in Brasov county, central Romania, got the highest scores of the over 30 projects submitted to the Agency for Regional Development, and will thus receive the funding, local Digi24 reports. Other projects were submitted by the authorities in Alba, Covasna, Harghita, Mures, and Sibiu counties.
Fagaras Citadel will be restored with EUR 4.9 million, the rest of EUR 3.6 million being allocated for Rasnov Citadel. The administrators of the two fortifications hope to sign the financing agreements by early May, and start the work as soon as possible.
Fagaras Citadel is located in the town with the same name, Fagaras, in Brasov county. Besides its massive walls, the fortress is also surrounded by a defensive moat. However, although it was a defense fortress once, the citadel is now a quiet place full of history where visitors can enjoy a lovely afternoon. In 2014, the citadel was included in a list of ten best castles in the world.
Rasnov Citadel is one of the most popular historical monuments in Brasov county, as well as one of the best-preserved peasant citadels in Romania’s Transylvania. The fortress is located on a big hill near Brasov mountain resort, so don’t miss it if you are in the area because the view from the top is worth a while. American luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler included Rasnov Citadel on a list of 10 beautiful snow castles in the world.
