Two-thirds of Romanians do not want monarchy to be reinstated, survey says

02 June 2023

About 66% of the respondents to a recent Avangarde survey believe that Romania should not change its political and state organization and return to monarchy. The country was a monarchy until 1947 when it entered the Soviet sphere of influence and was transformed into a socialist republic.

Nevertheless, 44% of Romanian respondents have a positive opinion about the monarchy. 19% of respondents believe that King Michael did the most good for the country among all of Romania’s kings. Another 14% believe it was King Carol I.

Almost half of the respondents hold neither a positive nor a negative opinion of Princess Margareta, the Custodian of the Crown. 32% see her in a favorable light. Nearly a third say they do not know who Prince Consort Duda is.

Meanwhile, 45% of the respondents have neither a positive nor a negative opinion of King Charles III of the United Kingdom, while 35% have a positive opinion.

The survey was conducted in the context of King Charles III's visit to Romania and was completed from May 29 to June 1, with a sample size of 864 individuals, according to G4Media.
