Union leader: New metro trains are too wide for the Bucharest system, platforms need some carving

01 May 2014

The new metro trains Romania has bought with EUR 98 million are too wide and cannot fit into the metro stations in Bucharest, unless 10 centimeters will be carved out of the platforms in 14 metro stations, said Ion Radoi, the union leader at the metro company Metrorex.

Metro company officials however say the new trains are up to standards and suggest there is nothing else to be done. They even add that internal tests have already been made with all six trains delivered so far, and none of them were too wide, nor touched the platforms. Metrorex has to receive ten more trains under this contract.

Radoi however argued in a recent press conference that the trains Metrorex bought from Spanish CAF are too wide, and even gave numbers and technical details. He said the trains should have been functional starting April, and that Metrorex would have to cover the additional costs of carving the platforms.
