20 May 2011

Cable company UPC Romania will start broadcasting programs in 3D, being the first cable operator in Romania to offer such services. UPC customers need to have a high definition (HD) subscription with UPC and also own a 3D TV set.

The new option comes with no extra cost for the clients. The company has invested EUR 100 million in developing its network in Romania so that it could provide 3D services.

UPC will broadcast the Roland Garros tennis tournament in 3D, a premiere on the Romanian market. It will be broadcasted on Eurosport between May 22 and June 5.

The company currently has 23,000 clients who have a HD service subscription. So far, 2,000 3D TVs have been sold in Romania, according to research company GfK Romania. 1,400 of these were sold in 2010. The average price of a 3D TV in Romania is of EUR 2,000.

“3D is a market segment with an increase potential in the following years. Romanians' interest for this type of experience has already been confirmed, with the 3D movies already gaining large audiences,” said Severina Pascu, CEO of UPC Romania.

Bucharest cinemas have started to screen more and more 3D movies, while the first IMAX 3D cinema has also been opened in Bucharest, within Afi Palace Cotroceni shopping mall.
