US ambassador: Romanian second most spoken language in Microsoft branches worldwide
Romanian is the second most spoken language in Microsoft’s branches worldwide and the war in Ukraine highlights the importance of the Romanian-US partnership, US ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalec recently said during an event dedicated to the Independence Day.
The ambassador noted that “Romania and the United States aim to build more democratic, inclusive, and prosperous societies.” She said that this mission in Bucharest brought her back to Romania after 15 years. In fact, a large part of her speech was delivered in Romanian.
Kathleen Kavalec also spoke about the war at Romania's border. "These common values are the reason why we remain united against the unprovoked and terrible attack by Russia on Ukraine. Together with NATO allies, we provide support to the Ukrainian people in these difficult times. Romanians have welcomed millions of Ukrainian refugees with open arms, tea, and sweetbread. The Romanian government provides invaluable assistance to Ukraine. Your generosity is touching and will not be forgotten," she said, cited by Agerpres.
The ambassador said that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine demonstrates the importance of the Romanian-US partnership. She mentioned that over 3,000 American soldiers are stationed in Romania. "This presence not only allows us to train together to enhance the capabilities of our allies, but it also helps ensure that Romania's borders are secure and that we can sleep more peacefully," added the ambassador.
The diplomat spoke about the connection between the two countries in various fields, including IT, and highlighted that "Romanian is the second most spoken language in Microsoft's branches worldwide." Journalists at Euronews, however, say that the idea that Romanian is the second language spoken in Microsoft branches is an exaggeration.
Kavalec also stated that "from George Enescu and Maria Tănase to Louis Armstrong and Red Hot Chili Peppers, we have enjoyed a wide range of exchanges and cooperation in the fields of art, education, and business, which have intensified in a world that has become more interconnected than ever."
This year's reception is dedicated to the city of San Diego, California, and "pays tribute to the history, people, and diversity that have made the United States of America the vibrant democracy it is today." In this regard, symbolic cars representing the spirit of California, surfboards, and a graffiti wall created by Romanian artists were displayed at the event space.
President Iohannis joined the ambassador to say that "the Declaration of Independence, adopted 247 years ago, remains one of the core documents marking the progress of human freedom through the ages. [...] Today, more than ever, when Russia continues its illegal and horrible war unleashed against Ukraine, we must act with full determination in order to defend the principles consecrated in these core documents."
Also present at the event, Romanian PM Marcel Ciolacu said that Romania wants to deepen the Strategic Partnership with the USA by intensifying cooperation across all areas, ranging from defense and security to economic and cultural components. He added that “Romania is determined to demonstrate its ability to position itself as a predictable and reliable member within the international community,” according to Digi24.
