US VP during visit in Romania: We are on track to open the missile defense site at Deveselu

22 May 2014

American Vice President Joe Biden, who made a two-day official visit to Romania this week, said things were "on track to open the missile defense site at Deveselu” in the country's east.

Biden acknowledged Romania's committment to the ballistic missile defense, which is being built at the Romanian airbase by the US.

During his meeting with Romanian President Traian Basescu, Joe Biden also spoke about the Romanian military.

“Romanians have stood shoulder to shoulder with us in the Balkans, in Iraq and Afghanistan. About 1,000 Romanian troops continue to serve there - all courage and no caveats on the battlefield. And you’ve offered us a transit hub to help draw down our force in Afghanistan, and you’ve also embraced the post-2014 mission in Afghanistan,” he said.

Biden also stated that Romania embraced the approach to the ballistic missile defense, five years ago.

“I want to reaffirm that we’re on track to open the missile defense site at Deveselu,” Joe Biden said.
