Hundreds of vegetation fires in Romania cause damages, traffic disruption
Hundreds of vegetation fires occurred in Romania over the past few days, leaving livestock dead and causing traffic disruptions and accidents. Many times, the fires are set by people who are cleaning the fields.
In Galaţi county, 300 hectares of land burned in one night and the fire extended to a sheepfold in Pechea, where 200 animals died, Stiri.tvr.ro reported.
In Prahova county, 39 fires were reported in less than 24 hours. Several people were hurt as the fire expanded to various household annexes.
In Dâmboviţa, close to the commune of Doicești, a traffic accident occurred after a truck clashed with the firemen’s truck for lack of visibility because of the smoke in the area.
On the national road DN 27, between Târgovişte and Ploieşti, in the area of Mija, six cars collided in a chain reaction accident because of the low visibility caused by the smoke. Also after a fire, the road traffic was interrupted for 40 minutes on highway A1 because of the low visibility in the area of the Bolintin-Vale locality.
Nationwide, thousands of vegetation fires were reported over the past week, with a peak over the weekend.
The Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU) has asked people to stop cleaning the fields through burning as the fires cannot be controlled because of the wind.
