Vella Gulf’s presence in Romania reaffirms US commitment to work closely with NATO allies, says ship’s commanding officer
The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf arrived on June 3 in Romania’s Constanta port.
According to the ship’s commanding officer, Vella Gulf’s presence in Romania reaffirms the U.S. commitment to strengthening ties with NATO allies and partners, while working toward mutual goals of promoting peace and stability in the region.
“This is an important time to reassure and demonstrate our commitment to work closely with NATO allies in order to enhance maritime security, readiness, and naval capability,” said Navy Capt. Robert Katz in a statement of the US Department of Defense.
While in Romania, the ship is scheduled to host he fleet commander of the Romanian navy, along with other visitors. Sailors plan to remodel an orphanage, visit the Romanian Maritime Museum and tour the city of Constanta and the Romanian capital, Bucharest, according to the statement.
US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel also arrived today (June 5) in Romania’s Constanta port, where he was welcomed by Romanian Minister of Defense Mircea Dusa. The two officials visited the USS Vella Gulf and then had a joined press conference.
During his visit in Romania, Chuck Hegel would also meet Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
