WB: Foreign investments in Romania bring smaller added value to economy than local ones

27 October 2011

The added value created by the foreign companies' investments in Romania is smaller than the one created by the local companies and the lowest in Central Europe, according to Donato de Rosa, World Bank’s senior economist, quoted by Mediafax newswire. Moreover, this shows that the foreign investments in Romania didn’t contribute much to the country’s economy, he added.

“The Romanian companies, as well as the foreign ones, are less productive than in other European countries, but the local firms reported a faster productivity growth compared to the foreign companies,” said Donato de Rosa. However, the World Bank’s economist added that “the positive thing is that the foreign companies have been a model for the Romanian ones”.

The annual growth of added value created by the foreign companies in Romania between 2003 and 2008 was 2.6 percent, while for the Romanian companies the growth was 5.9 percent, according to the World Bank.
