Weather warnings for heavy rains in Romania, Bucharest included
Romania’s Meteorological Association (ANM) has issued several weather warnings for the period between September 30 and October 2, forecasting heavy rain for much of the country.
Several counties in South, Southwestern and Southeastern Romania are under a yellow alert for heavy rains starting today (September 30), 13:00, until October 2, 8:00.
In this period, it will rain over large areas with the amount of water expected to exceed 30 to 40 liters per sqm and even 70 liters per sqm in some places, according to ANM, which also predicted strong winds of up to 70km/h.
A orange code for heavy rains is also in place starting September 30, 21:00, until October 2, 02:00, for eight counties in Romania, namely Teleorman, Giurgiu, Ilfov - including Bucharest, Calarasi, Ialomita, Braila, Constanta and Tulcea.
In these places, the amount of water will exceed 60 liters per sqm over large areas and 80 liters per sqm in some places.
Also, in this period, “the cooling process will intensify and the weather will become extremely cold in the central and extra-Carpathian regions, where daytime temperatures will frequently be around 10 degrees lower than the average for this time of the year,” according to ANM.
Following these weather alerts, the Romanian authorities might also declare an orange alert for floods.
Several rivers in Southwestern Romania are currently under a yellow code for floods, which is in place until today (September 30), at 18:00, according to a warning issued by the country’s National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management.
