Money wire service provider Western Union recently appointed Gabriel Sorbo in charge of the company's activity in Romania, as well as in Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece and Malta. In Romania, he replaced Daniela Budurea, who was promoted regionally at the company's headquarters in Vienna.

Under Sorbo's regional leadership, Western Union will continue to expand its network of agents in Romania, beyond the existing 5,700 locations. The company also plans to give access to its services via electronic channels in Romania. Customers currently have to find an agency which offers Western Union services and go there in person to deal with their transactions.

“The European zone and the Community of Independent Countries – CIS are a first example of the transformation within Western Union, and Romania is one of our core markets for new services and channels,” said Gabriel Sarbo.

He has been working with Western Union for 14 years, and before his current position, he was country director for Italy and Malta, then regional director for Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Malta. Romania and Bulgaria were later added to his portfolio.

Sarbo is a finance specialist, and was previously finance director for Western Union in South Europe.

Western Union has been active in Romania since 1996 and its money wire services are available though a network of 5,700 partner agencies, including Banca Românească, Banca Transilvania, Bancpost, BRD – Groupe Société Générale, Credit Europe Bank, Banca Comercială Carpatica, Raiffeisen Bank, Garanti Bank, Credit Agricole, Millennium Bank, Romanian Post and PayPoint.
