What is on the Romanian Parliament's agenda this fall?

01 September 2015

The Romanian Parliament returns from recess on September 1 and will start working on some important laws, such as the new Fiscal Code, the new public system wage law, and the budget for next year.

The Fiscal Code is by far the most pressing point on the agenda, as the debate on this law has kept the headlines of the Romanian media during the summer. The leaders of the main political parties in Romania have finally reached an agreement on the exact tax cuts to be made starting January 1, 2016, so there should be no problem for the new Fiscal Code to pass in the next week, according to the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Liviu Dragnea, reports local Mediafax.

The law on public sector salaries will probably require more debate, as the Government has already approved two ordinances: one that increase the high officials’ salaries and one for the medical personnel’s salaries. Other state employee categories will likely ask for wage raises, so it is to be seen how the Parliament will handle this hot potato, as the budget deficit for 2016 must also be kept under control.

The budget for 2016 will be another hot topic on the agenda. The Government should send its budget project to the Parliament by November 15.

The law that regulates voting by mail and the Big Brother laws may also be discussed, as they’ve been postponed so far. Last but not least, the National Liberal Party (PNL) may try to file a no confidence motion against the Government.
