What's in a job: Romanians work unpaid overtime, don't respect their bosses, go to work for the paycheck

01 May 2013

Almost half of Romanians' main motivation to go to work is the monthly pay packet, while 32 percent say they do it out of passion, according to a recent study which was carried out on online. The majority of Romanians believe the country's economic situation can be improved and overcome by work. Romanians see themselves as hard – working – 55.4 percent, but the percentage of those who think Romanians are lazy is close – 44.6 percent. Their models when it comes to work are Germans, the Japanese and the Chinese.

Most Romanians believe state employees work less than those in the private sector, and only 29 percent believe employees in the two sectors work the same.

One in three Romanians works overtime at least once a week, and around 18 percent spend a weekend at work once every month. Only 8 percent of the Romanians who responded to the online survey said they keep with the fixed work schedule. Extra hours don't seem to bring extra pay, as only 13 percent say they were paid for working longer hours, while 21.8 percent only sometimes receive a compensation for their extra effort. One in three Romanians works overtime without any extra pay.

On top of this, employers don't enjoy a good image in the eyes of their employees, with most respondents – 68 percent - saying their bosses are not models to follow when it comes to respect for their work.

The survey was carried out online between April 25 and 29 on 5,800 respondents over 18, from urban areas.
