Who’s at the helm of Bucharest’s major five & four-star hotels?
Several expats and Romanians (most of whom happen to be Romanian women) run some of the largest five and four-star hotels in Bucharest.

General managers of five-star hotels in Bucharest
Athenee Palace Hilton
General manager: Jan Thomsen (Danish). He took the helm of the five-star hotel downtown Bucharest in November 2013. He has been working in the hospitality industry for more than 27 years, most recently in Budapest as general manager at Hilton WestEnd, where he spent five years. He is an avid kayaker and always enjoys a race on the fjords when he visits Denmark. His LinkedIn profile is here.

Grand Hotel Continental
General manager: Sanda Almasan (Romanian). She became the hotel’s GM in October 2010. She has been working in the hospitality industry for the last 16 years. Profile on LinkedIn.

General manager: Stefan Frank (German). Frank took over the GM position for the five-star hotel downtown Bucharest in October 2012. He has 21 years of experience in the hotel industry. His LinkedIn profile is here.

General manager: Markus Koller (Austrian). He has been working in Romania since 2003, with a 4-year hiatus for positions in the region. He became general manager of Pullman Bucharest World Trade Center in June 2012. Back in 2003, he was director of sales and marketing for the same hotel (then named Sofitel). Crowne Plaza
General manager: Franz Rattenstetter (German). He returned at the helm of the hotel in 2011, four years after ending his first 6-year term running the five-star hotel. He has over 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry. Profile on LinkedIn.

General manager: Sonia Nastase (Romanian). She has been running the hotel since September 2009. Nastase started out in the hospitality industry in 1996. Her LinkedIn profile.
