Wife of European Commission president Barroso attends household worker's wedding in Romania

Maria Margarita Barroso, the wife of the European Comission president Jose Manuel Barroso was in Romania, in the county of Maramures, where she attended the wedding of a former household worker's children. Maria Topan from Maramures, who has worked almost 10 years in Barroso’s house, invited her to the wedding. Topan has become one of the most trusted persons in the Barosso household in Portugal in the meantime.

Maria Margarita Barroso said that the Romanian woman became a close friend and that’s why she attended the family wedding in Romania.  “Maria told me about Romania, about Maramures. It’s very interesting to find there are old habits here and see how people work the field”, said the wife of European Comission President Jose Manuel Barroso. “I visited a prison from the communist regime. I also visited Barsana Monastery and some old peasant houses”, Mrs. Barosso also said. Maria Margarita Barosso also visited the main attractions of Maramures, including Sighet’s Memorial of Pain.
