Windows 8: 1 mln downloads in 24 hours, whole-heartedly aims at touch screen and tablets

02 March 2012

Microsoft's Windows 8 consumer preview, with its all new touch screen targeted interface, has recorded a million downloads in the first 24 hours since its launch, according to Microsoft. Windows boss Steven Sinofsky said Windows 8 development would follow the pattern set by Windows 7, so after the Beta developers preview and the consumer preview, next up should be a “release candidate” version, followed by a version for release to computer manufacturers.

Reviewers are unanimous in hailing Windows 8 as an uncompromising touch screen and tablet oriented operating system, and, although Microsoft say it is built on the stability of Windows 7, the look and layout are completely different. Some commentators predict Windows 8 will become a serious competitor for Apple's iOS. User comment varies from the enthusiastic praise to the vitriolic abuse that Microsoft always seems to provoke.

Microsoft, with over 90,000 employees in the world, released data about USD 69.9 billion mid-2011, and a net income of USD 23,1 billion. The company was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975.
