The Romanian Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday adopted the government emergency ordinance making snow tires mandatory during the winter, according to Mediafax newswire. The VChamber of Deputies of the lower house of the Parliament is the deciding chamber for this normative act.

Drivers are required to use snow tires from November 1 until March 1, or face fines between 2,500 and 4,000 lei (EUR593 to EUR950) and lose their car registration certificate. In addition to snow tires, trucks weighing more than 3.5 tonnes and people carriers with more than 9 seats must be equipped with snow chains.

The ordinance was adopted by the Senate in April.
