Wired magazine runs story on Romanian 'cybercrime central town' of Ramnicu Valcea

02 February 2011

US magazine Wired has recently published a piece about cyber crime in Romania and about a network of online scammers stemming from the city of Ramnicu Valcea. The magazine has sent its reporter Yudhijit Bhattacharjee to investigate the story on site in Romania and report about the people said to be involved in the online scamming chain. Bhattacharjee has also talked to two police officers who investigate the network.

The author of the article, titled “How a Remote Town in Romania Has Become Cybercrime Central”, describes the small Romanian city where young people can afford expensive cars, even if they don't have stable, well paying jobs.

“In fact, expensive cars choke the streets of Râmnicu Vâlcea’s bustling city center—top-of-the-line BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes driven by twenty- and thirtysomething men sporting gold chains and fidgeting at red lights. I ask my cab driver if these men all have high-paying jobs, and he laughs. Then he holds up his hands, palms down, and wiggles his fingers as if typing on a keyboard. “They steal money on the Internet,” he says”,” writes the Wired article.
