Workers at car manufacturer Dacia's Romanian factory start strike over pay
More than 5,000 workers at the Dacia car factory in Mioveni have downed tools and started a spontaneous strike in protest over pay. The action started this morning (March 20 ) at Dacia's Romanian production facility. The Dacia employees are apparently displeased that their demands on pay have not been included in a new agreement due to be signed on March 31.
The protest began within the plant, but later workers came out to talk to journalists. The union representing employees at the factory is yet to give an official statement, but a protestor said, “We are dissatisfied with the provisions of the new collective agreement to be signed on March 31,” quoted by Mediafax. The workers reportedly asked for a 25 percent pay rise, but were offered just 5 percent by the employer. The local media also quoted a spokesperson for the factory as saying that negotiations between management and workers were currently underway.
