World Bank appoints Mamta Murthi as Director for Romania and the region

world bank The World Bank has appointed Mamta Murthi as Country Director for Central Europe and the Baltic Countries in the Bank’s Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region, effective as of February 1, 2013.

Murthi will work with Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovak Republic and Slovenia.

Before starting her new position, Mamta Murthi was an adviser in the office of the Managing Director of the World Bank.

According to her CV, she speaks English, Hindi, Russian and Spanish.

Mamta Murthi joined the World Bank in 1995 and has worked in various roles since, including as an economist on Kazakhstan, a senior economist working on Serbia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria. More recently she has worked as a lead economist and a sector manager for education in the ECA region.

Orignally from India, Manta Murthi holds a D.Phil. in Economics, from Balliol College, Oxford, and a Bachelor’s in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Prior to joining the World Bank, she lectured in economics at the University of Sussex, UK. She has also written widely on issues of poverty, demography, education, pensions, and skills, and is recognized for her econometric studies on fertility and the position of women in India.
