WWF and Coca-Cola launch project to restore wetlands, floodplains along Danube River, Romania included

02 July 2014

The World Wide Fund for Nature WWF and Coca-Cola have announced a seven-year partnership to restore wetlands and floodplains along the Danube River. The program is supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation through a grant of USD 4.4 million and will be applied in six countries in Europe, including Romania.

Through this new partnership, WWF and Coca-Cola aim to rebuild the wetland along the Danube river through a series of actions to be organized in the countries that the river passes through: Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria.

“The project will conserve and restore these vital wetlands and floodplains for the benefit of people and nature,” said Andreas Beckmann, Director of the WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme.

In Romania, the ecological restoration work will take place along the Danube River between Garla Mare and Vrata towns in Mehedinti county. This will contribute to the storage of over 5 million cubic meters of water during floods on the Danube, and will help maintain biodiversity.
