Yas Marina and Nürburgring racetrack designer Tilke interested in Formula 1 racetrack in Romania

09 March 2012

German company Tilke, designer of racetracks such as Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and Nürburgring in Germany, would like to develop a Formula 1 racetrack in Romania, either in Bucharest or on the seaside, according to Romania's Tourism Minister Cristian Petrescu, who attended the Tourism Fair in Berlin, where he met Tilke representatives.

“For the time being we are just discussing and we're waiting for their directors over in Bucharest. It remains to be seen to what extent the circuit is relevant and important for us,” said the Minister.

A potential racing circuit could be created in public – private partnership, as the state budget cannot afford such as investment. The state would provide the land plot and the infrastructure for the project.

Tilke started last year a racing track in Brasov county, under a International Auto Federation approval (FIA). The racing circuit should be ready in 2014 and would allow all sorts of car competitions but Formula 1.

Tilke Engineers & Architects, established in 1983, has 350 engineers and architects with offices in Germany, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. The company has worked on the likes of Bahrain racing circuit, Istanbul Park, the famous Yas Marina Circuit and Nürburgring, Circuito les Coves in Castellon and Circuit of the Americas.
