Statistics: One in three young Romanians find jobs with the help of relatives, acquaintances

31 October 2017

Most of young Romanians find jobs through the usual method, namely by sending their CVs, but almost a third of them find a job with the help of relatives or acquaintances, according to a study by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

There are 4.87 million young people in Romania, aged 15-34, and two thirds of them completed their studies, reports local Hotnews.ro. However, two out of five young Romanians don’t plan to go to college, as they believe that graduating from high school is enough.

The number of employed young people amounted to 2.5 million, with the rest of 2.36 million having no job. Sending CVs remained the most successful method of finding a job (49.3% of total cases of employment), followed by help from relatives, acquaintances or friends (the method by which 28.8% of young people have found work). The job ads published in the media or on the Internet come next (7%), followed closely by the direct contact by the employer (6.8%).

The study also shows that workforce mobility is extremely low in Romania, only four of 100 young people changing their residence to get a job. Meanwhile, one in ten working young people need more than one hour to get to the place where they work.

Of the total number of young people working, less than half (44.1%) consider that their level of education corresponds to the requirements of the current job. Moreover, one in five say that the studies they graduated from correspond little or very little to the tasks they have to accomplish at work.
