Over 1.9 million foreign tourists visit Romania, spending over EUR 1 billion
Romania saw about 1.93 million foreign tourists check in its touristic units in the first nine months of the year. They spent over RON 4.61 billion (EUR 1 billion), or RON 2,391 (EUR 530) per person, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).
Compared to the same period of 2015, the number of tourists went up by 10% while their spending went up by only 5.7%.
More than half (56.6%) of the foreign tourists came to Romania for business, including congresses, conferences, classes, fairs, and exhibitions. Their expenses totaled 57.3% of the total.
Only 43.4% of the tourists came for personal reasons, with over 60% of them visiting Romania for holidays while the rest coming to the country for medical treatment, visiting relatives, religion, transit or shopping.
Of the total foreign foreigners coming to Romania, 51.5% came through a travel agency whereas 30% organized their stay by themselves. Some 73.6% of all tourists came by plane. Only 14.3% travelled by car whereas 10.3% came by bus.
