Some 90,000 Romanian tourists will spend Easter in their home country

14 April 2017

Most Romanians will spend the Easter holiday in their home country this year. While around 90,000 Romanian tourists will spend Easter in Romanian destinations, a few thousand others will go abroad.

The most popular destinations are Prahova Valley, which includes Sinaia, Busteni, and Azuga mountain resorts, as well as Bucovina and Maramures areas, reports local News.ro. The accommodation places are nearly 90% booked, with the Romanians being expected to spend a total of RON 30 million (EUR 6.6 million) on accommodation and food.

However, around 3,000 Romanian tourists chose to spend Easter in the seaside resorts of neighboring Bulgaria, while some will go to the Greek islands of Corfu and Crete, join pilgrimages to Israel, or go on cruises in the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, some 1,500 Romanians are expected to spend the Easter holiday in Romanian seaside resorts.

Specialists told News.ro that most of the Romanians who chose to spend the Easter holiday in the country have made reservations at hostels and hotels directly, and not through travel agencies. Moreover, the hotel owners’ confidence in tour operators fell due to the insolvencies in tourism registered over the past year.

Most Romanian tourists chose to extend their Easter vacation with up to eight days, with the average expense for a stay abroad being below EUR 300 per person. However, those who chose to spend Easter in Romania will spend even less, namely under EUR 200 per person.

Romanians celebrate Easter on April 16 this year. They enjoy a three-day mini holiday, as the second day of Easter is a legal day off.
