Study: AFI Cotroceni Palace, most popular shopping destination in Romanian capital Bucharest

05 April 2011

AFI Palace Cotroceni shopping center in Bucharest is the most popular destination for shopping in the Romanian capital city, according to a recent survey by Colliers International. Second came Baneasa Shopping City and Bucuresti Mall. Baneasa Shopping City targets middle to high income shoppers, while Bucuresti Mall still enjoys the advantage of being the first modern mall in the capital, according to Colliers.

Third came Unirea Shopping Center, while the fourth place was occupied by Plaza Romania. In 2009, Bucuresti Mall and Unirea Shopping Center came first and second, while Baneasa Shopping City was the third and Plaza Romania and AFI Palace disputed the 4th and 5th places.

Compared to 2009, there was no major change in the top three Romanian cities in terms of performance recorded by existing retailers. Constanta remained on the first place closely followed by Cluj, while Timisoara came on the third place.

Regarding the evolution of sales, more than half of the retailers surveyed had a sales increase of up to 30 percent, while the rest recorded either stagnation or a decline in sales, but at a lower ratio than previous year.

The Colliers survey measures the performance of over 100 retailers present in both centers in Bucharest and in the country.
