After construction work hiatus, new Bucharest flyover to be ready next spring

18 November 2013

One of the two flyover bridges which will connect the Mihai Bravu boulevard in Bucharest to Calea Vacaresti will be ready in March 2014.  Work re-started on the construction site two months ago after a one-year hiatus.

The construction companies, which were recently awarded the tender after the first contract was cancelled, are Astaldi Spa and Astalrom SA, who will finish work on the bridge. In their first two months of work, they managed to recover around nine and a half months of the 12- month delay in the project, according to Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu, who recently visited the construction site.

Work on the second bridge part of the project should also start soon and is due for opening at the end of 2014, according to Oprescu. The flyover, which will include two parallel bridges, a 675-meter bridge and a second one of 687 meters, will go above the Splaiul Unirii and the Dambovita river. The project is expected to alleviate the car burden down town, as it will connect North and South.

The new project awarded to Astaldi Spa and Astalrom SA is worth some EUR 35 million, higher than the one initially concluded with the now insolvent Romstrade, because the project 'went through a series of changes,' according to the mayor.
