Agricultural production up 9% in Romania, vegetables still cover the bulk
Romania's agricultural production was up by 8.9 percent in 2011 on the year before, according to data from the country's Statistics Institute. Vegetable production was up by 12.9 percent, but animal production rose by only 0.8 percent, while the agricultural services segment was down 4.6 percent.
Most of Romania's agriculture relies on vegetable production – some 70 percent, the rest being covered almost entirely by animal production. Services bring less than 1 percent.
2011 was a good year for potatoes and cereals, up by 2.2 and 11.6 percentage points respectively on 2010.
On the animal production segment, Romania's cow and sheep production was up by 1.5 and 1.2 percentage points respectively within this production group, while production was down by 2.7 percentage points on the pork production segment.
