Amnesty International paints bleak image of Romania’s racism
The CIA prison in Romania or the discrimination of Roma and sexual minorities are among the topics which Amnesty International presents in its report for 2014 on Romania.
Amnesty International refers to the US Senate’s report on CIA from December last year, which writes about the existence of a secret CIA prison in Romania.
Ioan Talpes, former chief of Romania’s Intelligence Service, confirmed that Romania cooperated with the CIA to set up a prison in the country in 2002. However, he said that the Senate’s report is false.
Amnesty International also mentions that OECD decided in July last year that the Romanian state violated the right to life of a Roma man, reports local Mediafax. He was HIV positive and suffered from mental illness, and died in a psychiatric unit in Romania in 2004, due to inadequate care and life conditions.
The report mentions various other discrimination cases and racial attitudes of the authorities towards Roma people or sexual minorities.
