Audiovisual statistics place Romania high in the region, with 750 TV stations, over 600 radios
Romania has 750 TV stations, 633 radio stations and over 3,700 cable services companies, which makes the country one of the most developed audiovisual markets in Central and Eastern Europe, according to statistics from the Romanian audiovisual council CNA.
The first private radio broadcasting in Romania was on December 31 1989, a couple of days after the fall of communism. The broadcasting was made with a receiver that was brought to the country with the help of the France Embassy to Bucharest.
The first two radio stations launched in democratic Romania were Unifan and Nova 22 in January 1990. At the same time, Romania saw the beginning of the audiovisual distribution through cable networks, which was unheard of in the country at the time, according to the CNA watchdog, which celebrates 20 years of activity this year.
In 1992, CNA started issuing the first radio and TV station licenses and cable services distribution.
