Romania had 5.1 million pensioners at the end of March 2016, down 52,500 compared to the same month last year. Compared to the end of 2015, the number of pensioners dropped by almost 20,000.

Of the total number, almost 4.7 million retirees were paid from the social contributions budget whereas some 431,000 people were retired agriculture workers, reports local Economica.net.

The average pension of the largest category of retirees amounted to RON 930 (EUR 208.6). This represented 32.8% of the gross average salary.

More than half of them had pensions below RON 872 (EUR 195.6).
