Several screenings of the Romanian historical drama Aferim, with English subtitles, are on schedule at a Bucharest cinema starting March 13.  This is when the film premieres across Romanian cinemas.

The film, which won the director Radu Jude the Silver Bear at the Berlinale this year, revives an often overlooked part of Romanian history – the slavery of the Roma population, while blending in Western elements.

The black-and-white drama should be watched with subtitles, some say, even by Romanians, as it features archaic Romanian words.
