Bad weather hits Romania

17 December 2018

Dozens of localities in Western Romania were left without electricity over the weekend because of the snow, affecting tens of thousands of families.

More than 150 trees and 15 electricity poles were knocked down by the wind and the snow, and 40 cars were stuck in the snow in the last 24 hours in counties affected by bad weather, the general inspectorate for emergency situations announced, according to local Mediafax.

More than 60 schools in Caras-Severin county remain closed on Monday, December 17, due to heavy snowfalls, as they do not have electricity or heat. School will be suspended in four localities in Bihor county as well. Students in 39 localities in Arad county will not go to school on Monday and Tuesday due to lack of electricity.

Separately, trains with hundreds of passengers had to stop because of the blizzard. A train that was blocked at Orsova, resumed motion only after 9 hours. The National Railway Company (CFR) reported on Sunday afternoon that the intervention teams were operating in the area of Craiova and Timisoara counties in order to repair the damages incurred by the power supply system.
