Big hole in the road near the Parliament causes traffic restrictions in Bucharest

20 May 2015

A huge hole in the roadway appeared on Tuesday afternoon (May 19) on Splaiul Independentei, one of Bucharest's busiest streets that runs alongside the Dambovita river, causing the traffic restrictions in the area.

The crater that could easily swallow one car is near the Izvor Bridge, just a few hundred meters away from the Parliament’s Palace, one of the world’s biggest buildings.

The hole appeared as the sewers below the road collapsed, according to Apa Nova Bucuresti, the company that manages the water supply and sewage system in Romania’s capital. The road collapse caused no accident, and Apa Nova intervened to repair the damage.

The company asked the police to restrict traffic in the affected area, as it will have to work at a depth of over 4 meters, according to a press release. Apa Nova estimates that it will complete the repair by the end of this week if no unknown factors appear.
