Energy company E.ON Energie, natural gas producer Romgaz, retailer Selgros Cash&Carry, timber producer Holzindustrie Schweighofer, and car parts producer Schaffler are the largest companies in the center of Romania based on their 2014 turnovers, according to financial consultancy platform Risco.

The ranking includes companies in the Alba, Brasov, Covasna, Harghita, Mures, and Sibiu counties. Two of these counties, namely Brasov and Sibiu, have attracted important foreign investments, especially in the car parts sector whereas the other four counties in the region lacked industrial development due to the lack of natural resources as well as ethnic reasons. Both Covasna and Harghita have majorities of Hungarians, of over 73%.

Most of the top 20 companies in the region are active in the primary industries, processing gross materials in processes with low added value, such as energy, wood, chemicals, mineral water, or basic food.
