The VAT on sport and fitness services could be reduced from 20% to 9%, according to a project to change the Fiscal Code, which was submitted by the MPs Valeriu Steriu and Eugen Tomac to the Senate, reports local Hotnews.ro.

“Romania ranks third in the EU for the number of obese (people e.n.) and ranks last for the number of fitness and sport halls per capita in the EU. The public funding to promote sport and in sports infrastructure has been disastrous in recent years,” reads the draft project.

The document also states that one in three young people doesn’t engage in sports, and two-thirds only do sports a few times a month.

It is also mentioned that ten EU member states have adopted a reduced VAT rate for sport and fitness services. These include Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Finland and Sweden whereas Luxembourg has a super reduced VAT.
