British Ambassador: Romanians living in the UK are still welcome despite Brexit

26 June 2017

The Romanians living, working or studying in the UK are still welcome despite Brexit, said the British Ambassador to Bucharest Paul Brummell.

“The negotiations (for Brexit e.n.) started in a constructive way and we are looking forward to a good relationship between the UK and the European Union. As we said, we are coming out of the European Union […] but we are not coming out of Europe, we are partners and friends for Romania, and we are developing this partnership and this friendship,” the Ambassador said on June 22, reports local News.ro.

Referring to the Romanian citizens in the UK, the British Ambassador said: “I hope a solution will be found soon in the negotiations on Brexit, and that this solution will be a good one for the Romanian citizens in the UK and for the British citizens from other countries of the European Union.”

The Ambassador also stressed that Bucharest and London have a strategic partnership, based on two pillars: “Security and prosperity. And my goal is to develop our relations on both pillars.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May said at the European summit in Brussels that the EU citizens who arrive in the UK lawfully before Brexit will have the chance to build up the same rights as British citizens, reports The Telegraph.

The UK notified the European Council of its intention to leave the European Union on March 29 this year, in accordance with Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. Then, on April 29, the European Council adopted a set of political guidelines defining the framework for the negotiations and set out the EU's overall positions and principles. The European Council is made up of the heads of state or government of the 28 EU countries. The formal talks on Brexit started on Monday, June 19.
