Bucharest hosts new Piaţa Francophonie on former royal court building premises
The crossroad between Libertatii boulevard and Calea 13 Septembrie in Bucharest now hosts the recently inaugurated Francophone Square/Piaţa Francophonie in Bucharest, which is said to be the first such square in Europe. The opening of the square, which was created by the Bucharest City Hall, marks 20 years since Romania joined the International Francophone Organization.
The square is located on the premises of a former royal court building which burned down in 1812. Organizing the space and creating the monument cost some EUR 8,000.
The opening event was attended by Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu, Foreign Affairs Minister Titus Corlatean and Abdou Diouf, representative of the Secretary General of the International Francophone Organization .
