Bucharest Mayor asks for expertise on office building demolition
Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu has asked for an expertise on whether the demolition of the Cathedral Plaza office building is threatening the structure of the near-by Catholic cathedral St. Iosif.
If the expertise shows no danger, the City Hall will include in the 2015 budget the necessary to demolish the building, worth about EUR 15-20 million, Oprescu said in an interview for the Romanian news site HotNews.ro.
The Ploiesti Court of Appeal decided irrevocably in January 2013 that the building was built illegally and demanded its demolition. The trial was started by the Bucharest Roman Catholic Archiepiscopate.
The Cathedral Plaza project, developed by Millennium Building Development (MBD) group, was authorized by the Bucharest's District 1 City Hall in 2006. The building was officially finalized last summer.
