Bucharest mayor loses majority in the General Council
Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea has lost the majority in the Bucharest General Council, the body that votes on all of the mayor’s initiatives, following the internal conflict in the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
Firea criticized the party’s leader Liviu Dragnea and accused him of blocking her initiatives at Government level. She and a group of PSD local leaders also tried to force Dragnea’s to step down from the party’s helm but failed.
Firea leads the PSD Bucharest organization and had the majority in the General Council. However, following the conflict in PSD, District 5 mayor Daniel Florea, who is loyal to Liviu Dragnea, excluded four members of the General Council from the PSD organization he manages, namely PSD District 5, local Digi24 reported. The councilors that have lost political support must resign and will be replaced by others who are loyal to Florea. As a result, Firea may see most of her initiatives blocked by the General Council.
The Bucharest mayor is currently on a visit to Japan.
