Bucharest municipality to pay EUR 175,000 for another Caragiale statue
The Bucharest municipality will pay around EUR 175,000 for a statue representing Romanian writer Ion Luca Caragiale. This would be the third statue of Caragiale on display in Bucharest. It will be created by artist Ionel Stoicescu, who has been creating various monuments for the Bucharest municipality. He will create a bronze bust as a replica of an existing statue by Constantin Baranschi, currently in Rosetti square in Bucharest. The municipality wants to move the statue on Calea Victoriei, in front of the Novotel hotel, the premises of the former National Theater.
The Caragiale inspiration statue will not be the only one in Bucharest. A group of merry andrew statues inspired by Caragiale's plays was erected in front of the National Theater in Universitate square in Bucharest in December last year, following an investment of around EUR 1 million. The group is made of 17 pieces in bronze. The project was commissioned eight years ago but it lacked some approvals to be erected.
