Bucharest authorities want new lighting and signaling system for pedestrian crossings

23 November 2017

The pedestrian crossings without traffic lights in Bucharest could have a new lighting the signaling system. The city councilors approved on Wednesday, November 22, the project for a feasibility study to be carried out by the Streets Administration.

The lighting and signaling system would be made up of 270W LED lighting and white-and-cold light pillars placed on both sides of the pedestrian crossing, Led markers embedded in the road, which will have flashing yellow light, and two motion sensors located on the pillars for pedestrian detection, reports local Agerpres.

According to the draft project’s explanatory memorandum, statistics showed that the areas with pedestrian crossings represent a high risk of road accidents, both in daytime and at night. Thus, the place where pedestrians cross the street must be very visible to the drivers.

Data shows that there were almost 1,600 road accidents that involved pedestrians in Bucharest last year, in which 47 people lost their lives.
